FFP2 masks are a “Filtering Face Piece” as defined in Europe by the EN 149 standard. These mechanical filters are used in what is technically called “respirators”, and more commonly just known as “FFP masks”. FFP2 masks have distinct features and follow a different regulatory standard.
FFP2 masks are considered Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), as they protect the person wearing them against particulates such as dust droplets, particles, and aerosols.
This mask is normally used in construction, the pharmaceutical industry, the glass industry, foundry or agriculture. It effectively filters out powdered chemicals. It can also protects against respiratory viruses like avian influenza, Covid-19 or SARS.
The FFP2 face mask is approved by the World Health Organisation
The WHO also recommends the use of respirator masks such as the FFP2 by healthcare workers during aerosol-generating procedures (AGPs), as they have a tighter fit than surgical masks and therefore offer a higher level of protection.
